Semester II: The final Tutorial and pushing the background back

09/12/2014

Blog entry 20:

During my last tutorial I mentioned the issues I had face with the hand as an illustrative signifier (mentioned in blog entries 12 &14). Richard suggested that I revisit this in order to rule out all possibilities. The issue with the hands in a composition was theta they were becoming lost in everything else that was happening, Richard suggested that I look at the work of artists who obscure aspects such as the face, along with experimenting with other means of pushing a background back in order to draw the audience's initial gaze to the hand and what it is signifying.

Antony Micallef:

Micallef is an interesting example of the ability to express the face in an abstract way. The images above suggest the facial features through creating darker areas of the face and using expressive paint marks mixed with small aspects of detail in order to make what he is suggesting accurate, yet still expressive.
